Extractions & Wisdom Teeth Removal in Mississauga
Our Mississauga dentists perform tooth extractions and wisdom teeth removal only when another treatment option would be ineffective or if a tooth is compromising your oral health.
What Is a Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from the dental alveolus in the alveolar bone. Although permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime, there are a number of reasons why tooth extraction may be needed.
Request AppointmentReasons for Pulling Teeth
Some common reasons for pulling a tooth include:
- Infection in the tooth nerve that cannot be repaired with root canal therapy
- Problematic wisdom teeth
- Excessive tooth damage resulting from injury or severe decay
- To prepare for other dental procedures, such as applying dentures
- Loosened teeth caused by advanced periodontal (gum) disease
The Extraction Procedure
Tooth extraction procedures today are far less painful than ever before, thanks to powerful anesthetics and sedatives.
In many cases, a patient who has a tooth pulled usually experiences little or no discomfort and only minor bleeding.
Before a tooth is extracted, the area surrounding the tooth is numbed with a topical/and or injectable anesthetic, such as Novocaine.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that erupt in the back corners of the upper and lower jaw of an average adult mouth.
Unfortunately, most people experience problems with wisdom teeth. In most cases, this is because the teeth erupt too close to existing permanent teeth, causing crowding, improper bites and other problems.
Many people need to have their wisdom teeth extracted to avoid future serious problems. In general, the lack of the four wisdom teeth does not hamper one's ability to bite down, speak or eat.
Post-Operative Care
Patients with extracted teeth sometimes need to take antibiotics and, at the very least, take precautions following the procedure to ensure that infection doesn't occur.
Smoking, vigorous brushing and rinsing, and drinking liquids through straws are discouraged during the post-operative period because they hinder healing and may cause the wound to open.
Cold compresses applied to the outside cheek near the extraction area can help reduce any swelling and help promote faster healing.
